Marbella – all about TOWIE and Tiaras?

Puerto Banús

Exclusivity is a word that is synonymous with Marbella. Indeed, from conception Marbella has been associated with Royalty – it was Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe who branded the Marbella Club Hotel in 1954, soon becoming the epicenter of all high society activity in Southern Europe. But is today’s Marbella still a good representation of glamour and elegance?

It would be really easy to take a sweeping perspective of Marbella and conclude that it is something of an extreme – from one end of the scale to the other. You could stroll along the “Golden Mile” of Marbella, with gentle sands and restful waves and conclude that there is no better setting worldwide. And you’d be right! Alternatively, you could stumble around the second line of Puerto Banús early on a Sunday morning, amidst the debris of the night-before and feel the need for immediate relocation. But perhaps, this contradiction of extremes adds to the appeal of Marbella. Because, as Piers Morgan agrees, "the appeal is obvious". Whatever your fancy may be – partying loudly in luxurious bars til dawn or simply luxuriating in privacy – in Marbella, everything is possible.

The truth is that Marbella does not really need to market itself as the holiday-home destination of choice. It has one key element that few other places can compete with. Sunshine. And plenty of it. Marbella’s micro-climate provides 320 days of sun per year which subsequently provides a lot of time

on the beach, in the pool, alfresco dining, etc. It is this that is the real attraction for Marbella’s international residents – whether they are of “status nouveau” or not.

Richard Lewis Interiors (www.richardlewisinteriors.com) is a company that has greatly enjoyed

Marbella’s media resurrection since last summer. “Marbella is always in the English papers, but lately the coverage has been extremely positive. We were contacted by 3 production companies last year – 2 English and one American – and we are now taking part in filming for Marbella Mansions for UKTV channel Home.” Sebastian McLeod continues by saying of their current interior design projects, “The type of client that we have been working with has not changed drastically in our ten years here. Glitz and glamour is not always the order of the day – Marbella, like other places worldwide, follows certain trends and so there is a focus on comfortable, homely design and tasteful finishes that suit our stunning Mediterranean surroundings.”

In reality, Marbella does indeed entice those with the new-found fame of the noughties just as it originally attracted the elite of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. And it will continue to do so (you just need to take a look at www.celebritiesinmarbella.com to see quite how popular a destination it is!). Marbella does have the weather. It does have one of Spain’s largest airports. It does have a choice of 5 star hotels. It has beach. It has golf. And it is surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful, natural countryside.
